How long do gel nail wraps last?
Ten days or more is normal, and the number moves with the nail it is sitting on. Oily nail plates, hands that sweat and hands that are in water all day get nearer a week; dry nails and light hand use get the full run.
Emily, who co-founded this shop, wore one set for sixteen days with two small children, dishes, and hair washes in between. That is one pair of hands, not a promise. What follows is what decides which end of the range you land on, and none of it is about the design you picked.
What shortens a set
An oily nail plate
This is the first thing nail educators name when a set lifts, and it has nothing to do with washing your hands. Some people's nail beds simply push more oil up through the nail surface than others. It is genetic, and it shifts with hormones, diet and hand cream. Gel needs a dry, oil-free surface to grip, and a film of oil under it works like a non-stick coating.
If a whole wrap has ever come off in one piece rather than chipping, an oily nail plate is the likely reason.
What helps: wipe with rubbing alcohol right before applying, not before you make tea. Skip hand cream on application day until the set is on. If you know your nails run oily, wash with soap first, dry properly, then alcohol.
Hands that sweat
Nails absorb moisture and swell slightly. The wrap on top does not swell with them, and that difference at the edges is where lifting starts. Nail technicians treat very sweaty hands as their own case for exactly this reason.
What helps: cool, dry hands at application. Do not apply straight after a shower, a workout, or washing up.
Hands in water
Long hot soaks, washing up without gloves, swimming. The gel itself is waterproof the moment it is on, so this is not about a splash; it is about hours of it.
What helps: gloves for dishes. It is the single change with the biggest effect on wear.
A square free edge
Square corners catch on everything and lift first. A softly squared or rounded edge wears noticeably longer.
Skipping the file
Filing the excess downward at the fingertip leaves a clean, sealed edge. An edge that was pulled or torn instead leaves a lip, and a lip catches. This is the step that decides whether you get the back half of the wear.
What does not shorten a set
Not using a lamp. These are made to be worn as they come. A lamp is optional, and nothing we sell needs one.
Nail polish remover on other nails, hand sanitiser, sunscreen. None of it touches a wrap that is already sealed.
When it is not you
If one or two wraps lift and the rest are fine, the cause is in the list above. If a whole set lifts within a day or two, something was wrong with the set. Write to us and we will make it right rather than have you buy another one.
How long should you keep them on?
Our maker's own guidance is to take a set off within about a week, and sooner if your nails are on the thin side. Nails need a breather the same way skin does, and the set comes off more easily before the bond has had a fortnight to settle. If you want ten days, you will get ten days. If you want your nails in good shape a year from now, take them off sooner and put oil on afterwards.
